About M-KOPA Solar
M-KOPA Solar is committed to making high-quality energy solutions accessible and affordable for all. Since its inception, the company has brought solar power to more than 400,000 homes across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda—adding over 550 new connections every day. Its standard 8W solar system includes three lights, a mobile phone charger, and a solar-powered radio, with customers now also having the option of upgrading to a 20W system with a digital TV. By July 2016, M-KOPA had already enabled significant energy savings, with customers expected to collectively save around US$300 million over a four-year period. These households now benefit from over 50 million hours of clean, kerosene-free lighting each month.
M-KOPA’s impact extends beyond energy, having created employment opportunities for around 2,500 people across East Africa. The company’s achievements have earned global recognition: it was named the boldest company in the Developing Markets category at the 2016 Financial Times ArcelorMittal Boldness in Business Awards, won Best Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets at the Global Mobile Awards the same year, and was listed by Fortune Magazine in 2015 among the Top 50 Companies Changing the World. Additional accolades include the Zayed Energy Future Prize, Bloomberg Pioneer Award (2014), and FT/IFC Excellence in Sustainable Finance Award (2013).
